Silk founded by George Silk and Maurice Patey who started by overhauling and tuning vintage motor-cycles in their workshop in Derby the home of Rolls-Royce. They wanted to produce a high-quality British motor-cycle based around the Scott engine and the successful Spondon Engineering frame, but ended up designing a new engine as Scott would not allow the use of the engines.  In 1975 Silk engineering produced a 700cc model but this failed to compete with the Japanese and finally ceased in 1979 having produced only 148 complete machines.
