Excelsior formed by Bayliss, Thomas & Co was the first British motorcycle to go on sale in 1896. The Excelsior name was adopted in 1910 following the demise of the German manufacturer of the same name. Shortly after the second world war the company was bought by the Walker family and production transferred from Coventry to Birmingham. Production finally came to an end in 1965 and the firm was sold to the car accessory firm 'Britax', the company now famous for it's Safety Seats and Belts.
